Kickstart Your Literacy Pathway with MYReaders Today

MYReaders aims to empower the public to take ownership and solve illiteracy within their communities. The launching of the Literacy Pathway on Sedunia enables community empowerment by equipping and supporting volunteers to get involved in literacy initiatives.

Such initiatives includes the Kerinchi Literacy Hub programme by MYReaders where volunteers will read with the children from the community around the Kerinchi PPR flats, many from less privileged backgrounds. Ultimately, MYReaders’ wants to help every child learn to read, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. The more people are empowered to be involved, the more impactful the outcome is.

Get involved

Illiteracy affects a child throughout his/her life, entangling many other social issues. This in turn, affects the well-being of the local community. Individuals who are passionate to make a difference and drive change through literacy can begin their journey through the Literacy Pathway.

Becoming a Certified Literacy Champion

Take the first step in the fight against illiteracy by joining the MYReaders volunteer training workshop to become a Certified Literacy Champion. Literacy can be a daunting social challenge to address with plenty of technicalities to the solution. The workshop equips new volunteers with the skills and knowledge on how to coach reading effectively. By participating in this workshop, you will also be awarded a badge as a Certified Literacy Champion on the Sedunia Platform.

A Literacy Champion helps a child master the fundamentals of reading using the MYReaders Toolkit in community based reading sessions. On average, a child is able to achieve 2 years of reading growth in just 6 months. A Literacy Champion helps make this possible by dedicating time as a mentor to the child throughout the programme.

The Literacy Ambassador

The Literacy Ambassador is the next milestone down the Literacy Pathway. Individuals will earn the Literacy Ambassador badge by committing two hours every week in the MYReaders reading sessions to help children achieve two years of reading growth towards the completion of the programme. Along the journey from a Certified Literacy Champion to a Literacy Ambassador, volunteers will be able to witness the personal growth of the children and eventually be empowered to lead any community based reading sessions.

The Literacy Champion Journey

A Literacy Champion would volunteer two hours of their time every week through the MYReaders Community Programme to help children catch up by two years’ worth of reading growth towards the completion of the program.

Through the pathway from a Certified Literacy Champion to a Literacy Ambassador, the literacy champion will be able to witness the reading growth of the children and eventually empowered to lead the community classes.

How I do kickstart my Literacy Champion Pathway?

Kickstart your Literacy Champion journey by signing up for the quarterly MYReaders Volunteer Training Workshop! The training would take only two hours to get you all prepped for the battle against illiteracy among children. If you would like to try volunteering at the MYReaders community classes at KL Gateway Mall before attending the training, worry not! There will be a short briefing prior to the class before you are assigned to read with a child.

However, we highly recommend that you attend a full training workshop for a more enriching experience when reading with a child. So look out for their next training workshop happening in August!

There’s no pre-requisite to be part of the solution, as long as you are comfortable speaking English and enjoy spending time with children, you are welcome to volunteer your time with MYReaders. Stay up to date with MYReaders via Facebook. For volunteer opportunities, check out their Sedunia page.
